“Babe, breakfast is ready.”

Connor looked up from the hood of my car as I called out to him.

“As soon as I’m done changing the oil, luv.”

I wiped my hands on the dishtowel I still held and went back inside. This was one of his rare weekends at home as training was now at full speed as the Grand Prix finals loomed. He had been staying full time in one of the condominiums close to the track that the team had been renting. We had agreed that on the weekends when he had no training, he could catch a cab to me from the station if I was not able to pick him up. Since our first date a few weeks ago it had become a sort of habit for him to stay over. My bedroom and bathroom bore evidence of his presence as each time something new was added. Even now as I went upstairs there was a pair of his socks at the top from where he had dropped them the night before in our haste to ‘reunite’. I smiled at the memory of the look on his face when I had greeted him at the door with a red rose…only a red rose. Afterward, I had jokingly remarked that if he had those lap speeds on the track the Grand Prix was in the bag.

That first morning after our date where I had expected awkwardness, I felt nothing but a sense of comfort and completion. And from all indications the feeling was mutual. We were trying hard to keep it under wraps. But it was getting harder to hide how we felt about each other when we were in public and around each other. Sometimes I wondered if Lucy suspected anything. Her looks had been more smug than usual and her parables more cryptic. I guess it was just a matter of time but for now, we were keeping it to ourselves.

I quickly stripped the sheets and put on fresh ones, then vacuumed the rug. I gave a start as I felt a pair of arms wrap around me.

“I was calling but you obviously couldn’t hear. I’m all done. I’m just going to wash up and eat.” He pecked me on the cheek and moved around me. I put away the vacuum and finished straightening the room. I picked up his jacket and hung it in the closet next to a few of the shirts he had left there.

“You’re building up quite a collection of items here.”

He lounged against the doorway leading to the bathroom as he dried his hands.

“I’d return the favor if my real estate agent would hurry and find me a place. But she’s moving so slowly. I may need to fire her, or better yet sleep with her to see if that would encourage her to move faster.”

I pretended to consider it. “I don’t think sleeping with her would solve anything. I know from personal experience that sleeping with clients usually has them feeling as if your house is theirs as well.
